555 Timer IC, Pinout and Function details

555 Timer IC Pinout and applications:

We widely used 555 timer IC in electronic projects. This chip has multi-function time-based output signals. We can use 555 IC chips with the Arduino or make separate projects. It is available with different brand names, i.e., LM555, NE555, and SE555. But it is originally manufactured by Texas Instruments.
The chip is manufactured in different packages, e.g. SOIC, PDIP, VSSOP. For more details, the 555 timer IC datasheet is available at the Texas official site.

555 Timer IC
We use it for time-based operated siren circuits, control motor speed, and operating led flasher circuits. It can produce a lot of functions, e.g., oscillation, Astable. Bistable, Monostable, flip-flop logic, and pulse width modulation.

How 555 Timer work ?

You can get a lot of solutions from the chip if you want to understand how it works. There are a lot of timer projects and applications, e.g., timer-controlled circuits, sound, LED flashers, and more.

555 Timer IC Pinout

The circuit diagram clearly explains the 555 timer pinout. In the picture, I show the pin functions of the chip. The 555 timer IC circuit diagram clearly explains the pins. In the picture, I will describe the pin functions of the chip as shown in Fig.

Ground (Pin-1)

We require a negative supply voltage to pin #1 to operate the 555 IC chip.

Trigger (Pin-2)

One external capacitor and resistor control the trigger pin output. It will generate the oscillation signal as a flip-flop, depending upon the external pulse. Its value varies by changing the value of the capacitor and resistor.
The trigger input activates when pin # 2 receives a signal decrease to ⅓ of the supply voltage. Depending on the required output, it can operate in either astable mode or Monostable mode.

Output (Pin-3)

The output pin functions as mentioned by its name. It will generate timer output value either to run the motor, flash led, or some speaker.

Reset (Pin-4)

The reset pin is will activate if a negative pulse applies to Pin # 4. By overriding all other inputs, this pin will start a new timing duty cycle.

Control voltage (Pin-5)

This pin is used to control threshold and trigger pins. The pulse width of a waveform can be generated and controlled through Pin 5. In order to activate this, the external voltage must be applied.

Threshold (Pin-6)

The threshold pin function is to monitor the control voltage. It is an open collector output. When the control voltage ⅔ of VCC is reached, the timing cycle stops, and output 3 (pin # 3) becomes low.

Discharge (Pin-7)

Pin 6 discharges the capacitor, which is connected in phase to the output pin. It is inside the 555 IC, NPN collector output; it activates when the voltage becomes equal to ⅔ of the supply voltage.

VCC (Power supply) Pin-8

To operate the 555 IC circuit, a 5V to 16 VDC positive supply is required at the VCC pin. The device can sink or source up to 200mA current.

You can download the ne555 timer datasheet for reference. It can help you a lot for better understanding.

555 timer IC circuit diagram

In the figure, you can see a circuit diagram. The device has a total of eight pins. We connect negative voltage or ground to pin #1 VCC to pin #8. Its operating temperature range is 70 Celsius.
